Residents Can Donate $1 on Water Bill to Help Social Services Organizations
Every dollar donated to Scottsdale Cares funds 20 different social services programs, such as families with Alzheimers's, substance abuse, mental illness, employment services, disabled adults, home-delivered meals for the disabled and elderly, plus a hotline for troubled youth. 32,000 residents donate regularly, but there are 85,000 water customers, so there are many more households to reach.

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Seeking Stewards
The Conservancy is looking for volunteer stewards, especially those with mountain biking and horse-riding skills. Stewards maintain trails, provide guided hikes, and provide education about the Sonoran Desert. It takes training on two successive weekends (7 hours each) to qualify. Then stewards are assigned to a team covering one of 10 areas in the preserve.

The Conservancy has 143 stewards who help patrol Scottsdale's 20,000 acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve, including maintaining trails, leading hikes, and guarding against fires, trash dumping and vandalism.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the largest urban preserve in the nation.

Bike Program Seeking Teen Apprentices and Adult Volunteers
Bike Shop, Paiute Neighborhood Center, Bldg. 6, 6535 E. Osborn Rd. Scottsdale
Scottsdale's Handlebar Helpers is seeking youths, ages 12-17, to be apprentices and learn how to repair bikes. Also seeking adult volunteers with technical bike repair experience, who can assist in supervising and teaching the apprentices. Apprentices work on their own bikes, while learning to repair and recondition bikes, and get a reconditioned bike, helmet and lock in exchange for about 30 hours of volunteering in the community.
